6/9/2012 - 8/14/2012
Been very busy with small details of the build but the great news is that shes running! Have some things to finish up and she'll be road worthy!
5/22/2012 - 6/9/2012
Completed a lot of little items. Got the engine turning over, bunch of the interior back in and modified the tail lights. See the galleries for more!
5/11/2012 - 5/21/2012
Got the downpipe finished up and got the engine mounted in the car yesterday. Modified the hood to close today and hooked up the shifter cables.
5/9/2012 - 5/10/2012
Worked on more of the exhaust system.
5/7/2012 - 5/8/2012
Built the header collector and installed the dipstick.
5/2/2012-5/6/2012
Finished up the headers and wrapped them today. Need to build the rest of the exhaust and take care of some other things before the engine meets the car.
4/29/2012-5/3/2012
Installed the ignition coil/dogbon bracket and coils. Picked up, rebuilt and installed the throttlebody. Ordered a new sc belt pulley, tensioner, ac delete pulley and exhaust tubing.
4/4/2012-4/29/2012
Ported, polished, rebuilt and installed the supercharger. Ported and polished the throttlebody and dropped it off at the powdercoater. Started building the rest of the header system. Installed a bunch of brackets and sensors and sorted the rest of the parts for the engine build. The throttlebody should be ready tomorrow, then it will need to be rebuilt and installed.
3/25/2012-4/3/2012
Ported and installed the heads and lower intake manifold. Built the heads with stainless valves, 105# springs and MLS gaskets. Temp mounted the headers to start working the rest of the header design and exhaust system.
3/24/2012
Got my shifter in the mail today! Thanks snapperhead! Also, my throw out bearing came in at autozone, so since I can't drive, my mother took me to pick it up. When we got back, what does she say, do you want me to help put it together (I'm 32 , you take a guess at her age)? So with my mothers help, we got the throw out bearing in and the engine on the cradle!
2/28/2012-3/23/2012
Well on the 7th of March I was injured at work and had to have surgery a week ago. So work slowed quite a lot on the Fiero. I did order and rec a lot of parts for the car and am currently waiting on the head parts and shifter to get here monday the 26th. I had my brother come by, who knows nothing of engines, and put my shortblock together with my close supervision! It sucks not having use of you arm! He will help me more once the parts come in.
2/17/2012-2/28/2012
Received my new clutch disk and wilwood clutch pedal assy. Checked the disk and it will work great. Built a new clutch pedal mount. Also received the total seal gapless top ring set and file fit and installed them today. Gotta order the gasket set, MLS head gaskets and some other misc parts to finish up the longblock.
2/16/2012
Ordered gapless piston rings, the correct clutch disc and a wilwood clutch pedal. Also repainted some parts the other day cause I wasn't happy with how the bright silver came out. Ended up using a deep gray.
2/8/2012-2/9/2012
Built a cart to roll around the cradle set up yesterday and going to pick up another tranny today! A 5 speed that Andrew from Andy's FieroWorks is saving my live with since I got screwed on the other one. He's been a lifesaver! See his link in my links page. Picked up the tranny and got it cleaned, painted and mounted on the cradle. Checked to see that my clutch would fit and found that I ordered a 26 spline clutch instead of a 14 spline. The pressure plate is gonna work just need to order a 14 spline disc. Waiting on my tax refund to order lots more goodies.
1/26/2012-2/4/2012
Got the block, LIM, valve covers and the supercharger painted. Rebuilt the supercharger, trial installed the crankshaft to check clearance and found 0.002 clearance on all 4 mains. Perfect! Also cleaned up the pistons and reinstalled them on the connecting rods. When my tax refund comes in I will be ordering a bunch of parts including gapless piston rings, MLS head gaskets and a gasket set, along with another 4 or 5 speed Fiero tranny, since I was screwed on the one I bought and paid for. See the galleries for progress pictures.
1/13/2012-1/26/2012
Started building the new door panels. Need to cover them with foam and vinyl. Finally got the block back from the machine shop (11/17/2011-1/26/2012=2 months and a week or 70 days!). Got the motor mount pad on the cradle modified to work with the 3800's motor mounts.
1/12/2012
FInished up the headers today, ordered the stage 3 clutch and also a VSS connector unpinned. Want to do more but it's way too cold out.
1/10/2012 / 1/11/2012
Disassembled the speedo assembly, installed the white faces, removed the old crystal and soldered in the new crystal and resinstalled the gauge cluster. Worked on the new headers.
1/6/2012-1/8/2012
Friday I picked up the heads from the machine shop. The block still isn't done which is getting very frustrating. The new excuse is that his hot tank cleaner is broken. This time he says mid next week it will be finished. Saturday I pulled the gauge cluster out and pulled everything apart in preperation for the white gauge faces and installing a new crystal to convert it too 120 MPH. Also made the new trunk floor flap/battery hider. Painted the trunk floor. Today I fixed the dash corners close to the doors, as the were cracked pretty good. While that was drying I installed the painted trunk floor and modifyed carpet, smoothed the head casting markets, painted the heads and once the dash repair was dry I cleaned the whole dash and painted everything flat black. The dash looks 200% better. The repairs on the corners aren't 100% perfect but to get it any better I would need a new dash. I don't think it's bad enough to warrant that. All in all I got a lot done today and it's only 1:39 pm. Once the heads dry I may get some more done.
Well I went back outside and building the new headers! The rest of the mandrel bends should be here from jegs.com in the next couple of days to finish up the headers!
1/3/2012
Made a new e-brake boot to match the seat upholstry.
1/2/2012
Worked on modifying the front and rear bumpers and dropped the camaro flywheel off at the machine shop to be milled to 0.840.
12/12/2011 - 12/29/2011
Haven't updated the site in a while but have been very busy on the Fiero lately. Since the last update I spent about 36 hours cutting and sewing up new seat upholstry, built the new battery tray, modifyed the front and rear bumpers. I stopped by the machine shop today and the engine was in the middle of being worked. Been over a month (dropped it off 11/17/2011) but at least it's almost done. Should be able to pick it up Saturday morning. Still haven't received the four speed yet but it should ship out very soon.
Also received my clevite rod and main bearings the other day and ordered my 96 Camaro 3.8 flywheel today. Already shipped so I should receive that soon. Then the flywheel will go to the machine shop to get milled down to 0.810 inches.
12/10/2011 - 12/11/2011
Spent the most of the 10th dissassembling the seats, splitting the seams and making templates. The will be red with black vinyl bolsters. Went down to the machine shop and found out that their phone lines were full of water. The block and heads haven't even been touched yet but was told that they would be ready for next saturday. Today (11th) I started working on some of the body mods and also some final wiring.
12/9/2011
Removed the old e-brake cable. Pulled the old vinyl off all the counsel parts and finish welded the rear control arms. Tried calling the machine shop and apparently their phone has been disconnected. I will go down there tomorrow and see what's going on with my block and heads.
12/6/2011
Got the fuel pump installed. Still need to drop the tank and remove the stock intank pump. Will have to install some hardline down to the screen. Readjusted the driverside door to open and close better. Installed plastic vapor barrier on both doors. Permanatly installed the PCM. Wired in the fuel pump relay too.
12/5/2011
Working on the interior recolor today. Also installing the inline performance airtex fuel pump. Need to wire a couple little things here and there. Still no word from the machine shop.
11/30/2011 - 12/1/2011
Pulled out all the carpeting and center counsel parts to get ready for the 4 speed install and take care of the wiring for the 3800 as well as customizing the interior.
11/27/2011
Welded in the patch panels for the engine bay and the "trunk" and painted the engine bay. See pics in the photo albums. Next plans are to start getting the wiring spliced and swapped in. Getting closer with each step. Need to call the machine shop tomorrow and see how the block and heads are going.
11/26/2011
Worked on smoothing and cleaning the engine bay. Trial fitted some parts for the custom handmade notchback to fastback kit.
11/24/2011 - 11/25/2011
Tore the engine, tranny, and suspension off the cradle. Cleaned the cradle, once the 3800 block is back from the machine shop I'll work on the motor mounts. Tomorrow the plan is to clean and make modifications in the engine bay. Baring any problems I may paint the engine bay tomorrow.
11/21/20011 - 11/22/2011
Pulled the engine out. See pics in the gallery. This upcoming weekend I plan to tear everything down and start getting everything ready to be repainted. Also need to make the mounts for the 3800.
11/17/2011
Tore apart the top end of the iron duke for better accessability when pulling the engine and dropped the 3800 off at the machine shop for the following:
Hot tank heads and block
Surface the heads and block
Plug the oil hole for the balance shaft delete
Change the cam bearings and freeze plugs
Also sourced the parts for the rebuild. Should be ordering them this upcoming weekend.
11/16/2011
Got the car running and idleing great finally. Took it out for a couple mile test ride and it ran and pulled well, at least for a four cylinder. Come to find out when I got home, the main seal is shot and it's leaking oil horribly. So the 3800 SC swap is going to happen a lot sooner than anticipated. The block and heads will go to the machine shop tomorrow to get hot tanked and decked to run MLS gaskets. I plan to be around 15 PSI boost so MLS head gaskets are the best way to go.
10/24/2011 to 11/13/2011
I bought the car on the 24th of October in 2011. I knew it needed the fuel tank replaced and there was a spare that came with it. Spent the next day swapping in the tank. After replacing the tank and actually having fuel pressure I found that the fuel pressure regulator was leaking badly so I picked up a TBI rebuild kit and took care of the TB. With the car finally running, albeit not well, I diagnossed that the TPS sensor was no good and changed that out. Now running better I found out that the IAC motor needed to be cleaned, so I took care of that and it ran even better. After rebuilding the TBI I had noticed that the return fuel line was pretty well clogged with rust and crap so I cleaned that out well. Now the car is running much better. Still not idleing perfectly but it's much better.
While working on the fuel injection I also replaced all of the ignition parts, installed a shaved door handle kit, grant steering wheel and removed and painted all the interior plastic parts.
